Why WebP

According to Google, lossy WebP images are on average around 30% smaller than JPEG at comparable quality, and lossless WebP is about 26% smaller than PNG. WebP also supports transparency. Lighter images load faster, which helps your Core Web Vitals and your visitors on mobile data.

Does every browser support WebP?

Yes, every current browser displays WebP, including Safari since version 14. For a safety net, CrispSize gives you ready-to-paste <picture> code that serves WebP (or AVIF) first and keeps a fallback.

A note about Safari

Safari can display WebP, but it can't create WebP files in the browser. If you convert from Safari, CrispSize exports an optimized JPEG instead and tells you. For WebP files, use Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Want even lighter files? AVIF

AVIF is often 20 to 30% lighter than WebP. Turn on "Also export AVIF" in CrispSize to get both, then serve AVIF with a WebP fallback in a <picture> tag.
